Island Vibrations: rhythms from Ibiza, overdubs from Buenos Aires and London
Chris Coco and George Solar built a Balearic LP around a list of rhythms: Nyabinghi, Guaguancó, One Drop and one of their own, Algaroba.
Island Vibrations is a vinyl LP by Chris Coco & George Solar, released on 18 August 2023 on Disappear (catalogue number DSPPR060). It is filed under Balearic, Chill Out and Downtempo.
A chance meeting on the radio
The two Balearic DJs met by chance at Ibiza Sonica radio. Deep chats about dub and the future of chill out music followed, then a string of singles, then the idea of an album built loosely around rhythms.
The rhythm list
George, also an accomplished percussionist, made a list: Nyabinghi, Guaguancó, One Drop and more. Chris added one of their own, Algaroba.
Made in three cities
- Ibiza: the basic rhythm tracks, mostly drums and percussion, with a little bass from Fly, who is also the sign writer who made the cover image.
- Ibiza, Buenos Aires and London: various elements were added in all three, before what Chris calls "some digital wrangling".
The result, in his words: "an album of beautifully organic downtempo delights."
Listen
Algaroba is on Chris Coco's SoundCloud, alongside Guaguancoco, Rumba Solar, Como El Sol, Hook & Line and Pink Sun. The full LP is on Bandcamp.
